Review – Solo: A Star Wars Story

In a lot of ways Solo feels the most indicative of what our perpetual Star Wars future will be. It’s the most “here’s some more Star Wars.” The least ambitious.

In the parlance of comics, this feels more like a solo (haha pun) title rather than an event comic. We’re not here for world shattering plot, we’re here for characters and adventure.

And on those terms Solo succeeds. I enjoyed my time with these characters and had an enjoyable time at the movies. This is a good high budget adventure heist movie.

It’s a sharp contrast to Rogue One, which delivered much higher stakes and spectacular payoff, but failed to have compelling characters. That was a very flawed movie that has a climax I will carry with me forever. Solo is more consistently enjoyable but I’m really not going to carry any of it with me.

The best part of the movie is Donald Glover as Lando. I would have rather watched an entire movie about him but alas. Alden Ehrenreich is totally serviceable as Han. Emilia Clarke and Woody Harrelson are really good. Paul Bettany is way more compelling as a villain than he is as The Vision. Chewie is Chewie. There is a sassy robot.

There are so many unnecessary moments, so many explanations for things that didn’t need an explanation. But whatever, that’s kind of what you sign up for with a prequel. If that’s gonna drive you nuts then maybe don’t bother.

I had good time. That’s all I wanted.

Thank You For Your Time.
