Avengers vs X-Men Tie-ins and Reading Order

As far as the tie-ins go, here’s my list of reading order for issues I think are worth reading if you want to consume it all in order. This isn’t necessarily a prescribed order, but I just wanted to lay this out there to save you the hassle of figuring out the order of things.

Avengers: X-Sanction 1-4

Written by Jeff Loeb, Art Ed McGuinness

Not actually part of the event, just build up. It mostly exists to show Cable fighting the Avengers (Loeb and McGuinness had a string of collaborations for Marvel that were similarly structured), but this has a Cable Hope reunion that’s nice to see if you’re invested in that. This is a weird one because it both brings Cable back from the dead, but still leaves him off the board for AvX, so it’s also kinda skippable.

Avengers vs X-Men #0 [Hope Story]

Written by Jason Aaron, Art Frank Cho

There’s a Scarlet With story, written by Brian Michael Bendis, at the front of this issue which frankly sucks. But the Hope story by Jason Aaron is great.

New Avengers (2010) [25-26]

Written by Brian Michael Bendis, Art Mike Deodato

Issue 6 of Avengers vs X-Men introduces the Iron Fist Phoenix legend, and it’s in the pages of New Avengers that that gets fleshed out. It concludes and ties back into our main story with issue 27, so you could put off reading these until directly before 27.

Uncanny X-Men #16

Avengers vs X-Men: Versus #6 [Hope vs Scarlet Witch]

Written by Kieron Gillen, Art Jim Cheung

This mini-series was ll about fleshing out particular fights throughout the series, but this is the easy standout to me. You get a much better sense of how dangerous a fight this is and also you get a winner.

Uncanny X-Men #19

Wolverine & The X-Men #18 (Issue 17 isn’t a tie-in)

Uncanny X-Men #20

Avengers Vs. X-Men: Consequences [1-5]

Written by Kieron Gillen,

Art Tom Raney [1], Steve Kurth [2], Sot Eaton [3], Mark Brooks [4], Gabriel Hernandez Walta [5]

This is the aftermath series that sets the stage for what comes next for Cyclops and company. The driving force being the events that push Cyclops from being willing to sit in his jail cell peacefully to stepping back onto the board.

This is also kind of the last story with any real interest in Hope. She exists as a supporting character in the next two X-Force series which star Cable, Cable and X-Force (2013) and X-Force (2014), but after that she just hasn’t been in anymore comics. Marvel just stopped putting her in things. Maybe she’ll come back one day, but it doesn’t seem like there’s a lot of clamor for the character to return. There’s a lot of negative feeling around her, from what feels like people who never bothered to read the stories she was in. The way Marvel built so much around her I think rubbed people the wrong way; comics fans gonna get pissy and salty over dumb shit, it happens, over and over again, forever. My point is just that I really love the character and I think people should read the comics she was featured in; they’re predominantly good.

But now we’re at the start of a new era, the last one I’m going to cover here: The Bendis Era. With Brian Michael Bendis finally stepping away from the Avengers (After the longest tenure ever on that team) and taking over Uncanny X-Men and another, new, ongoing major X-Book.
