+1 (or Plus One) is a movie about shitty college kids at wild house party, but when a meteor passes by the nearby transformer starts freaking out causing intermittent blackouts. Oh and it also creates duplicates of all the party goers that are playing out the recent past of the originals, by the way. (There are some pretty contrived machinations to keep the duplicates and originals apart at first.) The tone is set when the first encounter between someone and their duplicate involves a man shooting himself and running away. The duplicates disappear when a blackout occurs and when they reappear they have caught up in time a bit. The movie builds to the inevitable confrontation between the party goers and their duplicates.

+1 isn’t your standard horror movie. It doesn’t follow the modern horror movie cliches, although what happens is horrifying on several levels. It’s more like a classic high concept sci-fi/horror idea wrapped up in a college party movie. This story could just be a twilight zone episode, except more explicit with more nudity. This isn’t a movie that’s trying to scare you, it’s more just about being creepy and unsettling. Although it’s also pretty good at being funny when it wants to be. The main sex scene is pretty great in that regard. What most impresses me about +1 is how far it takes its premise. There are so many movies that take an interesting idea and just don’t do anything with it. For all its faults (I don’t actually think the moment to moment execution is that sharp most of the time) +1 never backs down from pushing its story all the way to the end. This isn’t one of the best movies I’ve ever seen, but it is one of the most memorable. This is a movie that sticks with me; mostly because of the climax. +1 is worth watching, this one goes places.
